Now that you and your boo are engaged it time to start planning your elopement or wedding and with wedding planning comes invitations or announcements and with that comes engagement pictures! I realize that picking out outfits sometimes can be a daunting process, but it really shouldn’t be. There are a few simple guidelines to follow and when in doubt just talk to your photographer about what they think. I love helping my couples pick out outfits because depending on our photo shoot location certain colors with probably look better! So, without further ado here are my tips on How to Dress for Engagement Pictures!
How to Dress for Engagement Pictures
Tip #1: Matchy Matchy is out and Complimenting is in
Once upon a time wearing the same colors or pattern was a thing, but let me tell what a horrible trend that was. Wearing the same colors or pattern will end up making your images look tacky and “posey” and I’m not about that 😉
Now, wearing outfits that compliment each other is definitely the way to go. Think neutrals! Neutrals don’t just mean black, white and grey although those are fantastic options. There are neutrals of every color giving you more earthy tones which will look absolutely fantastic in pictures. For example, Red–>Burgundy, Blue–>Navy, Green–>Olive, Yellow–>Mustard, etc.
Pairing a “colored neutral” with a classic white, black or grey is typically the best way to go in my opinion, but remember every photographer has a different color palette that best represents their work so be sure to chat with them about it!

Tip #2: Wear clothing that flows and is easy to move around in
I tell all my couples that I love to give them a work out during our photo shoot so wearing clothes that are comfy and cute is an absolute must! I love to make my couples run around, spin, jump and even climb on rocks, etc.
If you want to dress up for your engagement pictures that is still totally doable. I always suggest that the ladies wear a maxi dress if they want to dress up, because you can achieve a dressed up look that allows you to have plenty of motion! One of the best parts about maxi dresses is that they look amazing blowing in the wind, too. Lulus has some amazing dresses for great prices!
The guys typically have it pretty easy as they are usually in jeans or pants and that gives them plenty of wiggle room to lift and spin their lady. I would just suggest to wear a nice leather or suede shoe if you want that dressed up look!
Tip #3: Incorporate Accessories and layers!
If you add accessories like a cute hat, bracelet, necklace or watch it will add some personality to your pictures! They will also give the opportunity for some fun detail shots throughout your photo shoot.
During the cooler seasons layering your outfits with a cute jean jacket or a nice blazer for the guys is always a smart choice as it will add some depth and even more movement to your pictures!
Well, there you have it folks! Three simple tips for you to follow to help pick out your outfits for you engagement pictures. Just remember when in doubt talk to your photographer! They’ll have the best advice for you depending on the time of year and the location!
